Lovelovelove.

I love this.

I wandered over and sat next to her. The problem was, there wasn't much room for one person on the cushion, let alone two. I sat next to her gingerly, expecting her to tense up and wince the way she always did when I got too close. She didn't; instead she paid me no mind and stared out the window. We were still silent. The silence around us was crushing. Except for the crackling of the lowering fire, there was no noise at all. I opened one of the balcony doors to let in the cool night air, realizing how paradoxical it was to have a fire for warmth and a door open for coolness at the same time. The air brushed ever so gently against Ivy's face, lightly pushing a lock of her beautiful hair away from her eyes. I sat back down next to her, even closer this time. I saw her jaw tighten, but other than that she made no indication she'd even noticed me. I saw her hand, laying palm-up and looking almost abandoned, on the bit of cushion next to her. It was just lying there... Ever so carefully, I reached out my own hand and came within inches of grasping her hand at last. Slowly, ever so slowly, I put my hand down, until our fingertips touched. Being the most gentle I had ever been in my life, I pushed my fingers up between hers, and let my palm caress fall gently in place, caressing her palm. Soon I was holding her hand- I was actually holding her hand! What was more, I was touching her in a gesture of love, something I had never thought myself able to do. It's funny, in a way; I was courageous enough to lead an army to certain death, I could slay a hundred orcs, or maybe even a dragon, but I couldn't do the simplest thing... hold her hand. After a few seconds of her not responding whatsoever, her fingers- ever so slowly- began to close over mine. Upon their closing in, she adjusted their position so it was more comfortable. My heart raced, and I was sure she could hear my heart pounding just as loudly as I could, after all, my heart might as well be in my ears for the violent racket it was making. She looked away from the window and at the wall, determinedly not looking at me. I moved closer to her, squeezing her hand. I let my other arm fall lightly around her shoulders, holding her, almost embracing her. I put my chin on her shoulder, resting my head against hers. My nose was buried in the hair just above her perfect ear. My lips close to it, I whispered, "I love you." Without moving, eyes closed in almost a wince, a single tear rolled out of her perfect black eyelashes and down her rosy cheek. Still barely acknowledging my presence in any physical way, she whispered, "I love you, too."
